Comments:
It’s Saturday night and the place is packed...The crowd’s energy is very
high...As they take the stage, Bobby asks everyone to take a step
back...Feels like this is gonna be a good show...
Minglewood starts it off...maybe they needed this one to get the kinks out,
I don’t know...But when Jerry takes over with Mississippi Half-Step, with
his vocals and lead guitar spanning the song’s wide and expansive nature, I
hear that good old classic grateful dead ...
Looks Like Rain finds Bobby and Donna harmonizing well together, as Jerry
and Phil are heard softly forging their own congruent paths in the
background...
Once again the crowd is too crowded up front...Now it’s Jerry’s turn to
humor the over-eager fans ...“It’s hard for us to get off seeing smashed
human bodies up here...give us a little mercy ! “ :) :) :)
Dire Wolf is next, followed by an upbeat Mama Tried., and then a tight
speedy transition into Big River...Jerry’s guitar playing is quite
impressive throughout...
Jerry then sings about the Candyman, and Donna mixes in well in the
chorus...
Jack Straw then ebbs and flows smoothly, building strong near the end, and
finishing gently...
Deal ends the 1st set..
“We’re gonna take a short break, and you can too !” Bobby announces ... I’m sure everyone here is glad they didn’t let this deal of a show go
down...
2nd set begins with Phil. Is he tuning or is this a solo ? Or both ? After
a bit, Bobby turns it into a slow march with Billy and Mickey so the crowd
can take a step back, and another step back, and another...
If Jerry builds Eyes, others will follow, and they do...In no hurry to reach
the first verse, a jam ensues... Then Jerry humbly melts into the background
and opens the space to the rest of the band...Phil then steps up to the
plate and takes the lead...The song is played very well by all...Phil
eventually ends it with volume as Billy and Mickey take over with a
transition into Samson...In that part of the song where Samson is fighting
the lion, Jerry’s guitar lashes out fiercely ...
It Must Have Been the Roses ...Or maybe it was the doses ???
Something good is going on with Phil tonight...And Jerry too...
1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8 Estimated....”I’m in no hurry, no...” And neither is Jerry,
as he explores the colorful musical terrain that his leads create...In the
midst of this mellow weaving exploration , He’s Gone is suddenly pulled
from the ether....
This is real...I remind myself.. The Grateful Dead ....I look around to try
to let this reality sink in a little further...Whew....
Drums... Phil then appears and starts jamming with them.... Then he leads
us to the Other One...Jerry enters with his own lead....Everyone in the band
seems to lead and follow simultaneously...”Spanish Lady comes to me, she
lays on me this rose...” ...rose ... symbol of rebirth in Grateful Dead
lore...The music takes you to far-away places/spaces and then brings you
back again....”comin’ around...” ...it’s a journey of mind and spirit...and
a collective journey also...the band is our kind tour guide....
Black Peter....Jerry sings it like he’s living it...
Sugar Mag !!!
“Head’s all empty and I don’t care...”
Everyone’s dancing with this joyous tune !!! “Sunshine Daydream...” ...The
band is giving it all they got...
The 2nd set goes out on a powerfully positive note....
The cheering crowd that has packed the auditorium brings the band back for
an encore...
“Hey, guess what night it is tonight ? “
One More Saturday Night !!!
Near the end of this rock and rollin' tune, Jerry leads the band into the
final crescendo....and final chord....
“Thank you and goodnight until next year ! “....
Wow..........there’s nothing like a Grateful Dead concert..............
