well.......don't expect much of a music review......to me it either sounds great or it don't!
anyway, at this time in the 70's, i was a BIG Pink Floyd fan. Since i didn't drive (and still don't) i was pretty limited when it comes to seeing concerts.....i had to depend on the kindness of friends for a ride, or i took the bus.....
up to this time i believe the only concerts i had seen were Pink Floyd in '75 and '77.......LOTS of fun---they put on a HELL of a visual show!
so sometime in mid-77 i was hanging at at this head shop a lot.....i became good friends with the manager and we would often toke up in the store.
he happened to be a deadhead, and he had some bootleg albums that he would play in the store...and they sounded pretty damn good to me! i had known some deadheads in '74 at this community college i went to, so i did get some exposure to them, but not enough for me to REALLY pay attention.....i had one friend that EVERYTIME i visited he kept playing Europe '72, and i kept trying to get him to listen to the Floyd.....
back to the headshop....
77
i remember that terrapin station had just come out and running into some other head who had JUST seen the dead at the forum 6-4-77 and he was just going ON and ON about the show to the point that i thought he was actually NUTS!
but meanwhile i was slowly getting into them....the first album of theirs i bought was Anthem, which i thought was pretty cool.....but still, i was spending my money on Pink Floyd bootlegs....
anyway, in December i saw that the Dead were coming to town in January, so i told my folks to buy me a ticket for xmas....just for the heck of it i thought i'd check them out......
so anyway on this night i ask my parents to drop me off at the Shrine auditorium....i tell them i'll csll them when it's time to pick me up......
it's about an hour or so before showtime and the first thing i notice is... HIPPIES!!!!! tons and TONS of them!!
now keep in mind i grew up in the suburbs and i think i probably was the only hippie type i knew....i remember watching news stories on hippies when i was a youngster and i HEAVILY identified with them...i thought they were the coolest thing on earth, but i had never really been around any before (by the way, i'm 22 at this time)
so here i am and i'm SURROUNDED by them!!! all these incredibly cool people, and left and right i'm hearing folks apparantly having one big reunion! everyone seemed to know each other!! hugs all around!!!! i even wondered if there was something special about this show that so many people were meeting up for it!
so i find my seat in the balcony....fortunately right by the front railing.....i've hardly sat down before someone passes me a joint! so i start talking to the folks around me, and they seemed happy to discover that this was my first show...i had brought five joints with me, and so i lit one up and passed it around....i remember this cute young woman sitting to my left who was there with her mom...they always went to shows together....
i was having a BLAST!!! and i still remember this CLEARLY.....the flash i had that i was here to see a concert! i was having so much fun it was like that was the only reason to be there....to be with all these awesome people.....and then realizing a concert was about to happen too!!!
and then the light went out...
i could not BELIEVE the energy that went up when the lights went out! DAMN!! it was like an explosion of HAPPY!!
the first thing i noticed.....the charisma that Jerry gives off!! i mean, there was such an ODD sense of familiarity to him, a floodlight of good vibes! i have NEVER come across anyone who's vibes were so strong....such an incredible aura!
ask anyone who's been to a show and made eye contact with him...we called it being "jerried"......although i had to wait a few shows before i experienced this....
as usual they took their time tuning up, and then they opened with Bertha/good lovin......WOW....i was TOTALLY unprepared for the energy and FEELING of this!!! JOYOUS!!!!!
like i mentioned before, i'm no good at reviewing songs....so let's just say i was in heaven!!! i remember them doing friend of the devil, and i was only used to the quicker version on american beauty, and i found the slower version quite hypnotic....
the whole first set just blew me away!!!!
i was agog.....
and i remember talking to the folks around me saying i don't see how in HELL they could match that for the second set, and them just smiling at me knowingly....
the second set starts and bobby announces their having technical problems.....i remmeber freaking out hoping that the show isn't over (silly me)
let's just say that they did MORE then match the first set!! i could not BELIEVE music like this existed!!!!!
i was converted...
pretty much the next day (since i had no money) i went to the head shop, traded in ALL my pink floyd albums and got as much dead as i could!!

A HUGE thanks to Larry who wrote this AMAZING review of his very first show!!!

See everyone, the review for the pick of the week can be anything you want it to be!!! Tell us about your memories of the show rather than a note by note break down!!!

Just basically tell us why a certian show has a special place in your collection.

Thanks very much Larry!!

Awesome Larry. Glad you had that experience. I had an experience sort of like that at my first show, which wasn't GD unfortanately. But, the vibe just hits you immediately. It's amazing thing. I shall d/l this tonight!

Good job, Larry!

As Larry knows, my first Dead show was exactly three days after his, on 1/13/78 in Santa Barbara. I should write a review of it. I can't think of a more appropriate show to write about than the first one.
